2013-14 Season Recap with Coach Baranik
The St. Andrews University Wrestling team finished the season with a record of 7-8, including winning the Washington & Lee Tournament and qualifying 3 wrestlers for the NAIA National Tournament in Topeka, KS. Senior, Chauncey Foster (SR/Hampton, VA), one of our tri-captains, who qualified at 125 lbs. finished the dual meet season undefeated at 15-0. He becomes the first wrestler in SAU history to go unbeaten. Foster drew the No. 1 wrestler in the country (Ryak Finch, of Grand View (Iowa) who was 24-0) in his first match at nationals. Foster earned the first takedown in the bout before he gave up a pin. Finch went on to win the tournament. Foster won his next match 20-4, and was winning his third bout 3-0 before losing in the last 20 seconds 4-3. It was a pleasure coaching Chauncey for 4 years. He's a good person, a hard worker and a good student. The future for Foster looks bright!
Denzel Vaughan (JR/Dinwiddie, VA), another tri-captain and former All-American when were in the NCWA, qualified for nationals by placing fourth in our Region out of 12 schools. Vaughan, a junior (285), received a tough draw in the tournament. He lost his first match to Saia Lotulelei of York and lost 2-1 to Gabi Mussallam of Missouri Valley in his second match. Mussallam finished 3rd and Lotulelei finished 5th in the National Tournament.
Jemson Villard (FR/Salisbury, MD), a red-shirt freshman was winning his first match at nationals 2-1 before getting pinned. In his next bout, he won 7-3 and in the third round of the two day national tournament he lost 3-2 on a riding time point. Vaughan and Villard both return, giving us momentum going into next year. Also, a "shout out" goes to Brandon Eldridge (FR/Bluefield, WV) who placed 6th in our region, but did not secure a wild-card to nationals.
