SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba overcame a 1-0 deficit to grab a 2-1 victory over the St. Andrews men's soccer team on Wednesday night in Salisbury, NC.
After a scoreless first half, St. Andrews got on the board in the 56th minute as Breno Calegari (Sao Paolo, BRAZIL) connected from about 15 yards out with a shot that glanced off the inside of the far post past Indian keeper Luke McCarthy. The Indians were able to equalize just six minutes later when one of their attackers guided home a loose ball from the outside the goal after a corner kick from Kenny Bonilla.
Catawba's winning goal included Bonilla as well as he broke in on Knight keeper Corey Francis (Greenville, NC). Catawba's Carson Smith would then collect the ball and send it back across to Faughnan, who fired in a shot from a sharp angle at the 77th minute.
SAU could only manage 6 shots against Catawba's inpenetrable defense. Caio Liberatti led the team with 2 shots on goal. There were only a combined 4 shots attempted in the first half of play as both teams were trying to figure each other out.
However, the second half had 14 total shots taken as the schools began to settle in and take more chances.
Francis had five saves for the Knights. SAU returns to action at home this Saturday at 2PM against USC-Aiken.
St. Andrews falls to 2-3 on the year while the Catawba Indians improved to 3-2.
