Hardeeville, SC- The St. Andrews University softball team lost both games of their doubleheader with 12th ranked USC-Beaufort on Thursday falling 6-0 in game one and then just 4-2 in game two.
Beaufort's Ashlie Layman was able to shut down the Knights as she pitched all 7 innings giving up just 4 hits and no runs with 7 strikeouts while Shelby Zipperer hit a two run homer to pace the Sandsharks.
Offensively for the Lady Knights, the team was not able to get much going until the 7th inning when singles from junior Kelsey Lee and senior Amber Madden put runners on the corners as Lee stole a base. However, SAU was not able to get on the board and fell 6-0.
Sophomore pitcher Corinne Eosso came on in relief of junior starter Mary Cross (0-2) and threw three shutout innings for St. Andrews.
Game two began with the Knights grabbing the lead as leadoff hitter Cross hit a home run, the first of the season for SAU. After USCB (2-0) tied it up in the second, St. Andrews would push another run across in the third to take a 2-1 lead. However, starting pitcher Eosso would eventually surrender two unearned runs as USCB retook the lead 4-2 in the fifth.
Eosso went 4 and 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits, two earned runs and 2 strikeouts while freshman Kori Ballard relieved her and pitched shutout ball the rest of the way. Kristy Cook pitched all seven for Beaufort giving up just 3 hits and one earned run with 5 strikeouts.
Ballard and junior DH Brittany Gunn also recorded hits for St. Andrews (0-4).
The Lady Knights will next be returning home to host NCAA Div. II Davis & Elkins College on Saturday at 1 pm in a doubleheader. Rain in the forecast could make the game subject to change.
