Milligan, TN—The St. Andrews University men's and women's basketball teams dropped both ends of their conference doubleheader at Milligan College Wednesday evening. The women lost a heartbreaker 67-64 while the men fell 75-53.
After an even first half that saw both women's teams shoot the same percentage but saw the Knights trail by 5, SAU would kick their defense into high gear like they have for many second halves this year and hold the Lady Buffaloes, the defending conference champs, to just 27 percent shooting in the second half as the Knights rallied to cut Milligan's lead down to one with under a minute to play. However, Milligan would make their free throws (19 of them) as they outscored the Knights 19-6 at the charity stripe and hold on for the three point win.
St. Andrews shot 41.7 percent for the second half led by their double-double combo of forwards Alexus Davis and Natia Gasque. Gasque led the team and all scorers on both teams with 20 points and 12 rebounds along with 3 blocks while Davis shot 5 of 6 from the field for 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Also in double-figures for the Lady Knights was point guard Mercedes Smith with 10 points, 3 assists and 2 steals while Ashley Jennings was consistent with 6 points and 6 rebounds.
Milligan (13-7, 9-3) was led by Hayley Wyrick's 19 points and Kayla Kelly's 16.
St. Andrews falls to 5-12 with the loss and 2-10 in the league and will next return home to host Point University (Ga.) on Saturday at 1 pm.
