Men's Basketball - Sat, Dec. 7, 2013 by Troy Baranik

Bristol, VA- The St. Andrews University men's basketball team dropped a close decision to the Va. Intermont Cobras 79-75 on the road in Bristol on Saturday afternoon in AAC action.

The Knights went into the half trailing by just 6 after shooting 48% while holding VIC to just 42%. In the second half, St. Andrews again shot a good percentage of 45% while making 7 more shots than the Cobras. But VIC shot 64% in that half to increase their advantage.

However, the biggest difference in the game and basically the deciding factor was the free throw line as VIC had 25 more free throw attempts making 27 of 36 whereas the Knights only had 11 attempts but still made 7. St. Andrews, although, won the field goal points battle 68-52 with the elimination of free throws as the Knights were whistled for 10 more fouls than the Cobras.

St. Andrews found themselves trailing by 14 early in the second half and rallied to cut the deficit to three points late, but couldn't quite get over the top for the win.

Forward Joshua Hart led the Cobras with 28 points on 7 of 11 shooting while Tyrone Smith finished with 20 points as VIC improved to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Junior guard Aaron Smith again led the Knights with 23 points on 8 of 15 shooting including 6 of 11 from the three-point line while forward Marko Zjacic was second on the team with 13 points but led with 8 rebounds. Junior forward Charles Bowen also had a good night with 12 points and a block on 6 of 8 shooting while forward Michael Wood led with 3 blocks as well.

The Knights, now 1-7 and 0-5, will continue on the road next Saturday at 4 pm when they play Columbia (SC) International (3-7) in non-conference action.
