Laurinburg, NC—The St. Andrews University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker 2-1 in overtime to conference foe Point University (Ga.) Thursday afternoon at Knights field.
After a scoreless first half, Point broke through first with a goal by Phillip Pressgrove in the 50th minute. Point kept the lead until late in the half when SAU freshman defender Laurin Michaelis finally scored for the Knights in the 85th minute to knot the game at one.
After SAU would get some nice looks and shots off before the end of regulation the game would go into overtime and it did not last long. Point ended up getting a free kick off of a Knights foul within the first 30 seconds of overtime and promptly put it in the back of the net to end the game in the first minute of overtime and give the hard-earned victory to the Skyhawks.
Pressgrove scored the game winner as well for Point. It was Michaelis' third goal of the year for St. Andrews.
St. Andrews outshot the Skyhawks 16-7 overall, but could not get the ball past Point keeper Tony Olvera and his 8 saves.
The Knights fall to 5-9 with the loss and 2-5 in the conference while Point improves to 6-8 and 3-3.
SAU will next travel to former conference rival Pfeiffer University on October 19 to battle the Falcons at 3 pm.
