Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University men's soccer team scored with 5 minutes to go in the second overtime on a goal by Andy Zimiso Stewart off an assist from Caio Liberatti to stun the Milligan Buffaloes and send the home crowd home happy on Tuesday evening at Knights Field.
The game began scoreless for the first 30 minutes until junior forward Caio Lima scored in the 33rd minute off an assist from senior Ben Parr to put the Knights up 1-0. It was Lima's 5th goal on the year as he now leads SAU in points with 11.
SAU would lead until the middle of the second half when Milligan came back with the tying goal in the 69th minute from Anthony Matekenya to tie the game at 1.
It would then remain tied for the next 35 minutes as SAU freshman goalkeeper Leandro Custodio made save after save against Milligan's relentless shots. In all, Custodio made 18 saves as the game went into double overtime where St. Andrews was finally able to come through for him with the second goal of the year by Stewart and third assist from Liberatti to give the Knights the thrilling and much-deserved win.
The Knights were outshot by Milligan 20-4 during the second half and overtime periods, but it didn't matter because SAU had the best goalkeeper on the field that day and that's all that mattered in the end.
With the win, St. Andrews improves to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the AAC and moves into a tie for fifth place in the conference while Milligan falls to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.
The Knights will continue their short 2 game homestand when they host Reinhardt University (Ga.) (2-3, 0-2) on Saturday at 2:15 pm here at Knights Field.
