Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University men's soccer team battled the #21st ranked Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University (SC) in the season opener Wednesday afternoon. However, SWU came out on top with the 3-1 win with 2 second-half goals in hot and humid conditions at Knights Field.
SWU's Douglas Andrade scored all three goals for the Warriors in the game as he recorded a hat trick. The forward scored his first in the 39th minute of the first half when his shot trickled in past the diving keeper and Knights midfielder Matthew Horner. He then scored his next two in the 59th and 82nd minutes of play.
Leading the Knights was sophomore forward Caio Lima scoring his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1 in the 51st minute as the Knights came out looking good in the second half. Assisting on Lima's goal were juniors Caio Liberatti and Aristeidis Tzimas.
Freshman goalkeeper Leandro Custodio made his Knights debut in the net but came up short in the bid for his first win. He made 5 good saves, however, and kept his team in it until late.
