Laurinburg, NC- St. Andrews University Director of Athletics Glenn Batten has announced the hiring of former SAU assistant basketball coach Brooke Johnson as the new head women's basketball coach for the Lady Knights.
"I am pleased that Coach Johnson will be joining St. Andrews University. Her broad experience as a player, coach, teacher and administrator made her a great match for our program. She understands our commitment to the NAIA and character-driven intercollegiate athletics," Batten said.
Prior to Johnson's position at St. David's School as Head Varsity Basketball Coach, Johnson assisted on the coaching staffs at East Carolina, UNC Asheville, and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Johnson's roles consisted of budget development and management, recruiting coordination, academic coordination, equipment management, conditioning program development, travel coordination, practice plan development, game strategy, and player management. While at St. David's in Raleigh, Johnson served as Assistant Athletic Director, varsity girl's basketball coach and softball coach.
Johnson began her career as the director of basketball operations at ECU where she coordinated team travel, worked with budgets, summer camps, recruiting, and various coaching and administrative duties.
She went from there to St. Andrews to work as the assistant women's basketball coach where she served as the academic and recruiting coordinator. She helped coach the 2007 team which went on to compete in the 2007 DII national tournament.
Johnson then worked at UNC-Asheville for a season (2007-08) where she served as the assistant women's basketball coach and academic coordinator before heading to St. David's school for the following 4 years as the head varsity girls coach. While there, Johnson's teams went 77-44, were named 2011 co-conference champions and qualified twice for the NCISAA 2A quarterfinals and made a 2009 NCISAA 2A semifinal appearance. She also served as the head softball coach and qualified for the 2012 state tournament.
As a student-athlete, Johnson played basketball at Peace College (Raleigh, NC) from 2000-04 and ranked #1 in NCAA Div. 3 in assists per game while making the All-Conference Academic team and All-South Region second team. She holds 8 school records at Peace and was a team captain for 4 years as well. She was also the Recipient of NC House of Representative Certificate of Athletic & Academic Excellence award.
Johnson holds a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Coaching Education from William Peace College while also achieving her M.A. in Exercise and Sport Science in 2006 from East Carolina University.
