Laurinburg, NC- St. Andrews University held their annual athletic banquet Thursday evening to hand out senior, academic, and specific team awards, including Most Outstanding Player and the Knight Award. Finally, three special recognition awards were given to three deserving athletes.
John Allen Renn was awarded the Robert Renfrow "Peanut" Doak Award for being the Outstanding Senior Athlete at St. Andrews University. Renn, a senior pitcher on the baseball team leads the Knights in wins with 7 and has an ERA of 4.28 with 39 strikeouts while making 8 starts and appearing in 18 games.
Victoria Bickett won the Carl F. Ullrich Award which best demonstrates the characteristics of leadership, courage, integrity, and sportsmanship. Bickett, a senior midfield captain on the lacrosse team finished the year with 42 points and 38 goals. She is also an exceptional art student.
Finally, the Howard Reichner Award was given to Karlee Arnold, an athlete who embodies the characteristics of a St. Android and demonstrates commitment in the classroom, and carries at least a 2.5 GPA. Arnold, a junior, was one of the top runners on the Lady Knights cross country team this past season.
All three awards were based on a vote by the head coaches.
The "Peanut" Doak Award is in honor of the legendary Robert Renfrow Doak. He was a highly successful coach and athletic director at Presbyterian Junior College from 1947-51 and a three sport athlete at NC State. The award was created by former athletes who admired Doak for the impact he left on the lives of those he coached.
The Carl F. Ullrich award is in honor of Mr. Ullrich, who was the Athletic Director at SAU from 1995-97 and most recently served as AD from 2002-04. He has accomplished much in his career and life and left a lasting impression on the department.
The Reichner Award is in honor of Professor Howard Reichner, who spent 29 years in the Army and came to SAU in 1992 as a politics instructor and is still teaching here today. He was the interim AD from 2004-07 until he returned to the classroom. He is a beloved member of the St. Andrews Community.
