Denmark, SC-- The St. Andrews University baseball team traveled to Voorhees College (SC) on Sunday for their last regular season games but, unfortunately, could only come away with a split of the doubleheader. SAU dominated in winning game one 10-0 but fell in game two 7-5.
Starting pitcher Max Everingham (2-4) started game one and pitched terrific as he gave up just two hits and no runs with no walks and 4 strikeouts in 5 shutout innings to lower his ERA to 3.13.
Leading the Knights offense was outfielders Ryan Harrold and Matt McCue and DH Matthew Beauchemin as they recorded two hits while McCue, Beauchemin and Michael Durig had 2 RBIs apiece.
Eight different Knights recorded hits in the game while 5 players smacked doubles. Daniel Whitecavage now leads the team with 15 doubles as well. Harrold also stole another base to continue to lead the team with 14.
Game two was an entirely different story however. Senior Matt Walker (0-1) started the game and gave up 7 runs over 1 and 1/3 innings to put the Knights into a hole. Demarcus Adams-England led the Tigers by going 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs.
The Knights tried to come back but could only manage 4 runs in the final two innings as they came up short 7-5. SAU was led by 2 hit days from OF Kortell Nixon and SS Mikey Morgan. St. Andrews relievers Beauchemin and Durig pitched the final 4 and 2/3 scoreless innings to help keep St. Andrews in the game.
SAU (25-22) will now prepare for the Conference Tournament which begins next week. St. Andrews' seed, opponent, and game time will be announced Sunday. St. Andrews can get anywhere between a 3 through 6 seed.
