Kingsport, TN-- The St. Andrews University Softball team lost to Union College (KY) 10-3 in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Monday afternoon. With the opening round loss, the Lady Knights' softball season has officially come to a close.
However, this year's team at 15-29 was much improved in 2013 as they produced 7 more wins than the previous season and had the most wins since they went 21-27 in 2009.
St. Andrews got off to a good start in today's postseason matchup as a 2-run single by Mary Cross in the 2nd inning that scored Vanessa Giacomin and Jenny Castanon gave the Lady Knights an early 2-0 lead. However, starting pitcher Jessie Wiegers (5-9) would give it right back in the 3rd inning as Danielle Borum knocked a 2-run home run to knot the game at 2.
Union would extend the lead to 5-2 with a 3 run 4th inning before the Knights made a mini rally in the fifth as 2B Kelsey Lee, who reached via fielder's choice, was brought home on a single by shortstop Amber Madden.
However, after Union put up two more in the fifth to go up 7-3, SAU pitcher Corinne Eosso came in to relieve Wiegers who threw 5 innings giving up 6 earned runs. After getting two outs via strikeout, Eosso could not find that third out as a double from Autumn Greenwell would give Union the commanding 10-3 lead as they would go on for the win.
No. 8 seeded Union (13-28) will now advance to the quarterfinal round on Tuesday where they will face the #9 ranked team in the country in Reinhardt University (37-4).
Sophomore first baseman Jenn George finished the season as the Knight's top hitter with a .331 average and the team lead in hits with 40 while also leading in slugging percentage at .388 and tied in total bases with 47. 3B Mary Cross led in runs (24), on-base percentage (.393) and walks (23) while Lee led in RBIs with 15. All three are sophomores and are returning next season.
