St. Andrews University Head Swimming Coach Brooks Teal has announced the signing of Ryan Frayne of Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Frayne is the eighth swimmer to sign with the Knights as the program is gearing up to start next fall.
Frayne brings impressive credentials to St. Andrews, including three gold medals in the 2011 Welsh National Championships, winning the 50, 100 and 200 meter breaststrokes. He also holds the Welsch national record in the 200 meter breast for 18 & under. Competing for Cox High under coaches Joe Gentry, Jeff Kwaitkowski and Bryan Rudolph, Frayne achieved All-American status in breast and the medley relay, with state finalist performances in 2011and 2012. In the 2012 Virginia High School State Championships, Ryan scored in the top eight in both the 100 breast and 200 IM, and swam on the state champion 200 Medley Relay team.
Frayne trains with and competes for the USA Swimming club TIDE Swim Team with coaches Josh Fulton, Sandra Jones and Jeff Kwaitkowski. Ryan has qualified for and competed in the National Junior Championships three times. In 2013, he showed his versatility by making the meet in all three breaststrokes, 50, 100 and 200, and also the 200 free and 200 IM. Frayne has made his mark in the highly competitive Virginia Senior Championships, with five championship final appearances, highlighted by a 2nd place finish in the 2012 long course meet and a 3rd place finish in the 2013 short course meet, both in his specialty, the 200 breast.
Frayne uses his swimming skills as a Lifeguard with the Virginia Beach Lifeguard Service as well.
"Ryan is just beginning to scratch the surface of what he can be as a swimmer," Coach Teal said. "His future is very bright and he will definitely be a leader for St. Andrews as we compete for honors at NAIA Nationals. It will be exciting to see where Ryan's career leads over the next four years."
