Barbourville, KY- The St. Andrews University softball team finished up their regular season on Saturday by splitting their doubleheader with Union College in Kentucky. The Lady Knights won game one 4-1 but lost game two 12-4.
The Knights showed their pitching strength in game one by holding the Lady Bulldogs to one run through 7 innings as starter Jessie Wiegers and reliever Mary Cross were very sharp. Wiegers went 2 and 2/3 giving up 2 hits, no runs while Cross (2-6) went 4 giving up 3 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
There was not much offense from either side as the teams combined for 10 total hits. However, SAU got on the board via 4 Union errors in the 5th inning as Jenn George and Amanda VanKleeck led with doubles. Freshman outfielder Jenny Castanon singled followed by AV's double, a Cross walk and a Kelsey Lee single while George doubled and Amber Madden singled to bring in 4 runs. However, because of the errors and unearned runs, no RBIs were awarded.
Union's offense came alive in game 2, though as they jumped all over Knights starter, Cross, for 12 hits and 10 runs in 4 innings of play. They only led 5-0 in the 4th when SAU began to rally by scoring 4 more runs off Union errors as the first six batters of SAU's lineup got singles. However, Union came right back in their half scoring five runs to lead 9-4. They were led by Autumn Greenwell's 3 hits and 5 RBIs while two other Lady Bulldogs also had 3 hits.
Freshman Corinne Eosso came on to relieve Cross in the 5th and gave up 4 hits and 2 runs over the next two innings as Union put the game out of reach with their 12th run to win 12-4 and improve to 12-28 on the year and 4-14 in the conference.
#9 seed St. Andrews, now 15-28 overall and 4-14 in the AAC, will travel to Kingsport. Tenn. to again matchup with the #8 seeded Union Bulldogs on Monday at 3 pm in the first round of the AAC Tournament.
