Laurinburg, NC- The Coker College (SC) Cobras brought their bats to Clark Field today as they rolled over St. Andrews pitching en route to a big 12-2 win over the Knights baseball team.
Knights' starter Max Everingham was able to hold the Cobras to just two runs over the first five innings as SAU started to make the No. 29 ranked team in Division 2 a little nervous. However, Coker would not rest as they then loaded the bases in the 6th on a walk and two hits some walks before Frank Suarez crushed a grand slam off the scoreboard in left field to make it 6-0 Coker.
Everingham (1-4) ended up throwing 5 and 1/3 innings giving up 7 hits and 5 earned runs along with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Senior relievers Andrew Pelfrey and Matt Walker also got some work in as they came in to replace Everingham. Walker threw 2 innings giving up 1 run with 2 strikeouts while Pelfrey pitched one inning.
Offensively, Coker (28-12) was led by third baseman TJ Giczkowski who went 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs while 1B Fico Kondla drove in 3 runs.
St. Andrews' offense was stymied today by Coker's pitching staff as 5 relievers combined to limit the Knights to two hits and no runs through the first 8 innings before surrendering two runs in the ninth.
Junior 2B Tyler Jordan was able to extend his hitting streak to five games for the Knights as his second inning hit increased his average to .279 on the season. Jordan has now gone 10 for 19 (.526) during his hit streak.
St. Andrews falls to 22-20 with the loss and will next host conference opponent Point University, Ga. (20-24, 7-11) on Friday at 11 AM in the first game of their season-ending home series. The 2013 St. Andrew seniors will then be honored on Saturday in a doubleheader at 12 pm.
