Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University women's lacrosse team pulled out a much-needed conference win Sunday afternoon as the Lady Knights celebrated senior day with a 14-9 triumph over rival Reinhardt University, clinching them the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season title!
With goals from seniors Shana Schroeder and Victoria Bickett and 5 goals from junior Catherine Lovallo, the Knights went on to win their 9th game of the season clinching them a spot in the national tournament in the process.
The total team effort also included 2 goals apiece from juniors Jackie Jones and Ariana Vicari.
Schroeder also assisted on 2 goals to now take over the hotly contested season points lead over Lovallo by 1 point 69-68. Lovallo now has 62 goals on the year to lead the Knights with Schroeder chipping in with 47 goals and 22 assists.
The Lady Knights got out to a 5-3 lead midway thru the first half but allowed Reinhardt (1-9, 1-3) to rally late on the strength of a five goal day from Nicki Caputo to take a 7-5 lead. However, Lovallo would score with 2 seconds remaining to cut the Knights deficit to one at the break.
St. Andrews would then come out of the break and show their offensive potential as they scored three quick goals to take a 9-7 lead. They would then extend it to 12-8 later on when Schroeder stepped up her game and took over scoring 2 goals and assisting on another to ice the game and go out on a winning note on her senior day.
Not to be outdone, senior goalie Meghan Powell also looked good as she made 16 saves on 25 shots on goal for a .64 save %.
Schroeder also led the day in ground balls with 12 and draw controls with 6 while Lovallo had 10 GBs. Bickett added on 9 GBs and 4 caused turnovers.
The Lady Knights (9-6, 3-1) will now finish out their home slate with a non-conference game against NCAA Division 2 member Newberry College (7-7) on Wednesday at 4 pm.
