Conway, SC- The St. Andrews University men's lacrosse team pulled out a thrilling win Saturday evening as they rallied in the fourth quarter to come out with an important 12-10 win over division and region rival Coastal Carolina University.
The Knights trailed 2-1 after the first quarter as both teams were still feeling each other out. However, SAU came on strong in the second quarter as they put up 4 goals to take a 5-4 lead heading into the half.
Coastal Carolina (3-4, 0-2) would not quit, though and outscored SAU 4-2 in the third quarter to take the 8-7 lead heading into the pivotal fourth. The game was paled at an intense and fast pace as both teams knew they were playing for a spot in the conference tournament.
The Knights would not be denied though as they exploded for 5 goals in the 4th quarter to put the game away and take it 12-10 on the strength of 6 goals from standout freshman attackman Jake Brown.
Fellow freshman Jonathon Arvin also played well in scoring 2 goals along with 3 assists while midfielders Matt Benedict and Connor Cather each had 3 assists apiece on the night. Benedict was able to take advantage of his defender as he played "point guard" and ran the offense most of the second half for the Knights.
Also scoring for the Knights were freshmen midfielders Nolan Gilmour, Cha'Sed Miller, and Cather while attackman Jason Wilson chipped in a goal as well. Leading in ground balls was Kekoa Naipo with 7 while Brown recorded 6 and Randy Loving and Arvin collected 5 apiece.
Freshman goalie Will Chiasson was also good in goal as he made 19 saves on 29 shots for a 65% save percentage.
Brown now leads the team with 44 goals and 57 points on the season while Benedict leads with 16 assists.
St Andrews improves to 8-4 with the win and 2-1 in the Northeast Division and with a win at Wofford College, SC (0-5) on Wednesday at 6 PM, the Knights will clinch a spot in the Southeast Conference Tournament which begins on April 26.
