Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University women's lacrosse team lost another non-conference game Wednesday as they fell to former conference rival Erskine College 13-11 at Knights Field.
The Lady Knights had trouble stopping Erskine leading scorer Samantha Burns as she was able to score 7 of Erskine's 13 goals yesterday.
St. Andrews, on the other hand, got off to another fast start as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead just 5 minutes into the game. SAU would extend it further as they would score their last goal of the half at the 9 minute mark to go up 8-3 on Erskine. However, this is when the Flying Fleet's defense would pick up as they held SAU scoreless for the next 20 minutes of play as St. Andrews would not score their ninth goal until there were just 18 minutes left in the game.
The Knights trailed at halftime 9-8 as Erskine would score with 1 second left in the first half. St. Andrews would eventually tie the score in the second half at 10 apiece with ten minutes to go. However, Erskine (5-8) would not be done as they closed with 3 goals of their own to hang on for the non-conference win.
St. Andrews was led by junior Jackie Jones' 5 goals while seniors Victoria Bickett and Shana Schroeder would add 2 apiece with junior Catherine Lovallo scoring 2 of her own as well.
Leading the Knights in ground balls was Lovallo who collected 8 while Schroeder and Bickett each had 7 apiece.
Jones now has 38 goals on the year while Lovallo leads the team with 53 goals whereas Schroeder still has the team lead in points with 60.
Goalie Meghan Powell also made 14 saves on 29 shots and only allowed 4 goals in the second half.
St. Andrews falls to 8-5 with the loss and will now travel to Savannah, Ga. on Saturday to challenge the No.1 ranked team in the NWLL, the SCAD-Savannah Bees (8-3, 5-1) at 12 pm.
