Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University softball team pounded the Falcons of St Augustine's University Wednesday afternoon on the way to a doubleheader sweep by scores of 9-1 and 4-2.
SAU was led on the day by dominating pitching from starters Corinne Eosso and Jessie Wiegers and sophomore reliever Mary Cross while the Knights offense exploded for 6 runs in the last two innings to blow open a close game one.
St. Andrews took complete advantage of 12 walks form Falcon starter Michelle Shackleford as she threw 5 innings giving up 5 runs and 12 walks but only 2 hits.
The Knights got on the board first as they plated 2 runs in the first inning on 2 walks and 2 throwing errors from St. Augustine's (14-7-1) without even recording hits.
There were only 9 total hits between the teams in game 1. However, the 14 walks from Falcon pitching helped give SAU the dominating 9-1 win which was called after 6 innings when the Knights scored 4 runs in the 6th with no outs.
Eosso was outstanding in game 1 as she went all six innings giving up just 3 hits, 1 run and no walks with 2 strikeouts. She has now pitched 5 consecutive very strong games and lowered her ERA to 4.74 on the season while improving to 5-8 on the year.
Offensively in game 1, the Lady Knights were led by multiple-hit games from right fielder Kim Baird and shortstop Amber Madden as they combined to go 4 for 7 with 4 RBIs. The Knights also were able to steal an impressive 9 stolen bases in game one, led by 3 apiece from senior Vanessa Giacomin and Madden!
Game two was a little more competitive but consistent pitching from Wiegers and Cross and clutch hits from Cross and first basemen Jenn George in the bottom of the fifth were enough to give the Knights the 4-2 win and extend their winning streak to 4 games.
St. Andrews saw themselves trailing 2-0 entering the 5th but Cross' 2 run single brought home 2 runs to tie the game before George doubled to bring home the winning run.
Cross pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs and just one hit as she took over for starter Jessie Wiegers (5-4) who went 5 innings giving up just 1 earned run and lowering her ERA to 3.25.
