Laurinburg, NC-- The St. Andrews University softball team was swept by Fairmont St. University (WV) in non-conference doubleheader action Wednesday afternoon as the Lady Knights concluded their week long homestand.

The Falcons, who compete in the WVIAC in the NCAA Div. 2, had only played 2 games so far this season but the rust did not seem to show as Falcon starter Chelsea Cobb was able to outduel Knights freshman starter Corinne Eosso in a pitcher's duel in game 1 as she prevailed 2-0.

Cobb went all 7 innings as she pitched a 3 hit shutout. Eosso almost matched her as she went 7 giving up just one earned run. The Knights however, left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th inning to end the game. St. Andrews was led by left fielder Jennifer Castanon's 2 for 3 game. Eosso has now pitched back-to-back splendid games for the Knights.

Fairmont finally broke out in game 2 as the offense erupted for 5 runs in the third inning including back-to-back homeruns by Amanda Skidmore and Holly Frampton to jumpstart the Falcons out to a 6-0 lead.

St. Andrews could never get into an offensive rhythm on the day as they seemed wore out from playing 10 games in 6 days. However, they were only outhit by Fairmont 9-8 in the second game. Sophomore 2B Kelsey Lee led the Knights with a 3 for 3 day while Jenn George went 2 for 3 to hike up her team-leading average to .307. Kim Baird, Amanda VanKleeck and Mary Cross also collected hits on the afternoon.

FSU starter Nikki Nuzum threw 7 innings giving up 8 hits, 1 run and had 5 strikeouts while Cross did a good job picking up the slack as a reliever as she threw 4 and 1/3 innings giving up just 3 hits and 2 runs.

FSU improves to 4-0 with the sweep while the Lady Knights fall to 9-20 on the year. St. Andrews will enjoy a few days off before hitting the road for an 8 game road trip. First up is conference rival Montreat College (1-5, 0-2) on Sunday at 2 pm.
