Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University softball team faced a stern challenge yesterday against NCAA Division 2 UNC-Pembroke (7-10) here at Knights Field as they dropped both ends of the doubleheader, 12-0 and 6-2.
The Braves came out on fire as they hit Knights freshman starter Corinne Eosso (1-3) for 11 runs on 15 hits as they raced out to a 5-0 lead going into the fifth before erupting for 7 runs, including two 2-run home runs in the inning to put the game out of reach. Megan Hilliard and Brea Hartley hit home runs for the Braves while their starter Katy Austin was able to shutout the Knights for 5 innings only giving up 4 hits.
Catcher Amanda Van Kleeck led with 2 stolen bases and a hit as she increased her team leading total to 9 stolen bases on the year.
Game 2 went a little better as Knights sophomore starter Jessie Wiegers had a rough first inning giving up three runs, but came back to shut them down over the next 3 innings allowing SAU to claw their way back into it.
The Knights got on the board first on an RBI single from Wiegers scoring senior DP Whitney Hill cutting the Brave deficit to 3-1. UNCP would tack on one more in the fifth and two in the sixth led by a 3 for 4 day from Holly Berry before Hill was brought in to relieve Wiegers on the mound and promptly finish the game with 4 scoreless outs.
The Knights did manage a comeback in the bottom of the 7th as the first two Lady Knights reached base via walk before sophomore 1B Jenn George got on with a single loading the bases. Kelsey Lee and Mary Cross then singled before freshman outfielder Jennifer Castanon drove in a run with a single, but was thrown out trying to extend it into a double causing the inning to come to an end.
George went 2 for 2 in game 2 with a double, as she led the Knights in hits.
St. Andrews falls to 4-8 with the doubleheader loss and will now prepare to face West Virginia Tech on Sunday in a doubleheader here at home at 1 pm before hosting Southern Wesleyan College in a makeup game on Monday.
