Women's Basketball - Thu, Feb. 21, 2013 by Troy Baranik

Kingsport, TN- The St. Andrews University women's basketball team's season came to end yesterday as they lost in the first round of the AAC Tournament 67-56 to Montreat College (NC) at the MeadowView Convention Center in Kingsport, TN.

The Knights were led by freshman point guard Mercedes Smith's 14 points on 50% shooting while guard Jamisha Lee led with 5 assists and forward Alexus Davis had 8 rebounds.

SAU struggled shooting in the first half as they only shot 27 %, but it improved greatly in the second half as they shot 47% and narrowed their deficit but could get no closer as they fell by 11. Neither team shot well from 3-point range as Montreat made zero shots from 3 but made up for it at the free throw line as the cavaliers made 13 free throws whereas the knights could only make 5.

Montreat was led by center Alex Gellman who scored 21 points while forward Liticia Singleton had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Senior guard Rachel Hewitt led with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals in her last game as a Knight while fellow senior Benee Norton finished her great scoring season with 8 points and senior forward Kimayah Fulcher ended her career with 6 points and 4 rebounds with a block. Norton finished the year averaging 9.6 points per game and 17 points per game in her last ten.

St. Andrews finishes the year at 4-25 while Montreat advances to the quarterfinals with an 18-13 record.
