Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University men's basketball team faced one of the most athletic and quickest teams that they will see all year Monday night as the hot-shooting Hornets were able to oust the Knights 113-99 in SAU'S regular season finale.
Junior guard Clavontae Brown led the Knights and was the top scorer on the night with 37 points on 12 of 17 shooting including some massive dunks. Browns' point total is also the new season high for any SAU basketball player this season.
However, it was not enough as Morris' shooting guard Frank Charles shot 8 of 13 from three-point range as he finished with 34 points. Morris had 4 players finish in double-figures and had 12 different players score on the night. Morris stayed pretty consistent through the game as they shot 50% overall and scored an astonishing 63 points in the first half as they took an 18 point lead into the break.
SAU, however, outscored the Hornets 54-50 in the second half as they rallied to put their 30 point deficit all the way to 14 by the end. It helped that the knights finally found their stroke after getting off to a cold start initially as they shot 58% in the second half led not only by Brown, but by senior Orlando Edwards' 3 three-pointers and 16 points and Chris Orr's 13 points and 7 boards on 5 of 7 shooting.
The Knights actually shot at a higher percentage for the whole game at 53%, but Morris attempted 20 more shots, making the difference.
SAU finishes their regular season at 1-24 and will now prepare to face Montreat College (9-19) in their third rematch of the season on Wednesday in Kingsport, Tenn. in the first round of the AAC tournament. Tip-off is set for 3:30 pm.
