Laurinburg, NC- The SAU Softball team continued their mastery at home as the Lady Knights were able to sweep away the Peace University Pacers Sunday afternoon and improve to 4-0 at home and 4-6 overall.

The Knights came back in dramatic fashion to shock the Pacers in game one 5-4 in 8 innings. After SAU got off to an early 3-0 lead on some errors and heads up base running in the first inning, SAU gave it all back in the top of the sixth when the Pacers were able to score three runs, the latter 2 off a home run from Sarah English to give Peace a 4-3 lead.

However, St. Andrews would not go down without a fight as they rallied to tie Peace (0-5-1) in the bottom half on a clutch RBI double from freshman RF Jennifer Castanon. After utilizing the international tiebreaker in the Knights first extra inning affair of the season, meaning each team would be allowed to place a runner at 2nd base before the inning starts, SAU would capitalize. They first allowed Peace to load the bases with one out before sophomore 3B Mary Cross snagged a line drive and tagged third base to complete the inning-ending double play.

Sophomore 2B Kelsey Lee then drove Cross in with the game-winning RBI on a bang-bang play at home plate to end the game and give the Knight faithful the 1 run victory. SAU was outhit 13-5 in the game but the Knights were able to score off of 3 Peace errors. SAU also stole 5 bases in the game, two apiece from senior catcher Amanda Van Kleeck and Cross. Senior pitcher Whitney Hill was credited with the win in game 1.

Hill then came out to start game 2 on the mound and after a rocky start in the first inning, in which Peace scored 2 runs; she completely shut down the Peace offense the rest of the game with 6 shutout innings as she recorded putout after putout to get her second consecutive win.

Game 2 was a pitching affair as the two teams combined for only 13 hits. The Knights tied it up with three runs in the second followed by scoring 2 more big insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to give Hill a big cushion to work with in the 7th.  Collecting RBIs for the Knights in game 2 was the bottom of the lineup as senior CF Vanessa Giacomin, sophomore 1B Jenn George, and freshman DP Jenna King all drove  in runs with Hill also contributing an RBI double to the right-centerfield gap. Giacomin led with a 2 hit day and a stolen base while George had 2 stolen bases.

SAU continues their home stand when they host UNC-Pembroke on Wednesday at 1 pm in a doubleheader as they look to remain undefeated at home.
