Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University Baseball team used their pitching to sweep away the Lynchburg Hornets on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon in Laurinburg as they rode senior John Allen Renn's three-hit shutout to a 1-0 win in game 1. They then pulled out a 5-4 victory in game 2 with the go ahead score in the 6th inning.
Renn (1-0) was able to pitch 6 efficient innings only giving up 3 hits with 4 strikeouts while 1B/P Michael Durig came on to throw a scoreless 7th to get the save.
The Knights also ran into a very strong and efficient pitcher as the Hornets' Brandon Miller was able to shut the Knights down for 6 innings. However, SAU was able to scratch across one run in the first off an error from LC's outfielder when DH Matthew Beauchemin doubled in junior center fielder Ryan Harrold. Senior left fielder Matt McCue led SAU with 2 hits in game 1 as well.
Both offenses then came to life in game 2 as the Knights again struck first scoring 2 in the first before Lynchburg tied it up at three in the fourth inning. SAU hit 4 doubles with 2 off the bat of 1B Daniel Whitecavage as he led the team with 2 RBIs while Durig also slugged a double and a single.
After Lynchburg (0-2) tied it at 4 in the top of the sixth, the Knights came back with a run in the bottom half to retake the lead when McCue scored off a Hornet error.
McCue then came out to pitch the 7th and was able to shut the Hornets down with 2 strikeouts to pick up the save. Pitcher Joe McCarty was credited with his second win as well as he threw an inning in relief.
Ty Bostick, Harrold, and SS Rickey Schattauer also had RBIs in game 2.
St. Andrews is now an impressive 4-1 and will next be home Saturday when they host Virginia Wesleyan for a 12 pm doubleheader.
