Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University men's basketball team played very well against the #25 team in the nation Thursday night but could not overcome the size and experience of the conference-leading Tenn. Wesleyan squad in falling 95-85.
The Knights battled hard throughout the whole game and played some of their best ball against one of the best teams that they have encountered all season. SAU played this team a few weeks back and couldn't really keep up with the fast paced team that subs out 5 players at a time during 5 minute segments of the game. However, tonight seemed like a whole new St. Andrews team that looked like it could compete with some of the best the NAIA had to offer.
Junior guard Clavontae Brown led the Knights with an impressive game including a team high of 21 points on 10 of 13 shooting, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Freshman center Chris Orr had a good game as well as he was able to put up 15 points along with 9 boards while sophomore guard Marquie Smith had a good all-around game of 9 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocks.
Senior guard Orlando Edwards also was in double figures with 11 points and 3 steals while freshman point guard DJ Carnegie had 9 points, 6 rebounds and the team lead of 5 assists.
TWC had 4 players in double-figures including a monster game from forward Zamarius McClendon as he had a double-double of 25 points (11 of 15) and 12 rebounds while forward Desmond Crisp had 22 points with forward Tyler Burse chipping in 19.
The overall shooting percentages were pretty even as the #25 Bulldogs were able to shoot 44.8% while the Knights shot a respectable 43.6% including scoring 46 points in the second half as they kept right up with the high-flying Bulldogs.
St. Andrews drops to 0-20 and 0-12 in the AAC while TWC improves to 18-7 and 11-1.
The Knights remain home this Saturday when they will host conference foe Reinhardt University (GA) at 4:00 pm in Harris Court.
Come out and support your Knights!
