Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews women's basketball team put up a great fight for 40 minutes, but could not come away with a victory against the more experienced and bigger Lady Bulldogs Thursday evening as they fell 67-61 in Harris Court.
St. Andrews senior guard Benee Norton had another stellar game scoring 24 points on 50% shooting along with 4 rebounds. However, no other Knight could get more than 9 points as SAU didn't have the scoring prowess it needed to pull off a major upset at home.
Junior guard Rachel Hewitt had a good night shooting as she was 3 of 6 from 3 point-range for 9 points and 2 steals while freshman guard Mercedes Smith had 9 points with a team-leading 6 assists.
TWC was led by the standout performance from forward Cody Houck who had a double-double consisting of 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs had 4 players in double figures for the night including 12 points and 7 assists from guard Heather Gibson.
TWC shot 52% overall for the game and 39% from 3-point-range whereas the Knights shot 46% in the first half before dropping off in the second half and averaged 40% for the game.
SAU went into the half trailing by 4 and the Lady Bulldogs got off to a 10-0 run in the second half to push their lead to 15 before the Knights rallied to get within 6, but could get no closer as TWC made their free throws down the stretch.
SAU falls to 3-19 and 1-12 in the conference while TWC improves to 11-2 and 14-8.
The Lady Knights continue their homestand this Saturday Feb. 2 at 2 pm when they challenge AAC foe Reinhardt University.
