Laurinburg, NC- Tonight's wrestling match between St. Andrews and Cumberland University (Tenn.) at Scotland High School was the first college match to be wrestled at Scotland HS and be broadcast on live radio (WLNC-AM-1300) for the first time.
However, the Knights lost a hard-fought dual 33-21 to the Bulldogs.
SAU was led by the powerful duo of sophomore captain Steffan Baker as he was able to control his match and eventually pin the #5 ranked wrestler in the east region in Jacob Shirley late in the third period. Heavyweight Denzel Vaughan then put on a great show as he rallied back to top CU's Tyler Smith 9-7.
Junior Chauncey Foster and senior Josh Tegard both won by forfeits at 125 and 133 lbs respectively to get SAU off to a 12-0 start. The Knights would then fall by pin during the next two bouts. Freshman Jared Key at 197 also fought hard before dropping his bout 4-1.
Cumberland U. (11-9) is in the NAIA and is also in St. Andrews' East Group conference for the NAIA national qualifier that is coming up on Feb. 16 hosted by St. Andrews. The Knights are now 1-3 in the conference this season and 3-10 overall and the matchup vs. the Bulldogs was the last region match of the year.
SAU is next in action this Saturday when they travel to Johnson City, TN to battle E. Tenn. St. and Southern VA University at 1 PM before they return home next Wednesday Feb. 6 to host Liberty University.
