Spartanburg, SC-- The SAU Wrestlers dropped a heartbreaker of a match Tuesday night as they fell 28-26 to Spartanburg Methodist College.
St. Andrews (2-7), who were missing 4 starters due to injury/illness, were led by the lightweight trio of junior Chauncey Foster (125), senior Josh Tegard (133) and senior Patrick Wells (141) who each scored bonus points in their wins to bolt the Knights out to a 14-0 edge.
Foster, the #10 ranked wrestler at 125 lbs. in the country, won by major decision to run his winning streak to 9 matches in a row as he improves to 12-2.
Upperweights Jared Key and Denzel Vaughan also won by forfeits, but it was not enough in the end as SAU fell two points short.
Sophomore Nick Sauceda (149) was leading his match before getting caught and turned for the pin while 174 lb. Russell Lindsay faced the Pioneer's toughest wrestler in #7 Mike Clevenger and fell by major decision.
St. Andrews will head back to Mount Vernon, Georgia this weekend for a busy day of wrestling on Saturday, Jan 19. St. Andrews will wrestle their first 3 NAIA schools, Life University, Brewton-Parker College, and Truett-McConnell College with action slated for a 12 PM start.
These schools are all in SAU's region and the matches will help determine rankings and seedings in next month's national qualifier tournament to be held at St. Andrews.
