Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University wrestling team lost their first match of the new year Wednesday evening as they fell 36-4 to the #20 ranked NCAA Division 2 UNC-Pembroke Braves.
#10 ranked junior 125 pounder Chauncey Foster got the Harris Court crowd fired up as he started things off by crushing the Braves' Jake Smith 11-3 to immediately give the Knights a 4-0 lead and extend his winning streak to 6 matches in a row as he now improves to a team-best 9-2 on the year.
Senior Josh Tegard then put up a valiant effort at 133 lbs. but could not overcome the strength of UNCP's Dontae Brown in losing 11-2. Senior Sterling Perry then drew the toughest opponent of the night in the #1 ranked wrestler in the nation at 141 lbs., Daniel Ownbey. Ownbey is a returning All-American as he placed 3rd in the nation last year and went on to beat Perry 24-8.
After UNCP (3-2) got bonus point victories in their next 4 bouts, Richard Manwarren (184) then came out and put on a great effort in only his 2nd match of the season, but could not come away with a victory as he lost a heartbreaker 4-3. Manwarren earned 3 stalling points in his bout, as his opponent chose to wrestle defensively, but it was not enough.
After another bonus point win for the Braves, 2012 NCWA All-American Denzel Vaughan (HWT) finally made his return to the mat in his first match in 10 months, but fell short in losing 10-5.
SAU (1-5) will now head to Macon, GA to battle Mercer College and Darton College this Saturday Jan. 12 at 1 pm.
