Women's Basketball - Thu, Jan. 3, 2013 by Troy Baranik

Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University women's basketball team battled with one of the top teams in the AAC in their first game of the new year, but couldn't quite hang with Milligan College falling 84-57 Thursday night at Harris Court.

The Lady Knights were led by the good game of senior forward Kimayah Fulcher as she finished with 14 points on an impressive 7 of 12 shooting along with 6 rebounds. Rachel Hewitt also played very well as the junior guard contributed 11 points on 3 of 4 shooting with a steal and 2 rebounds. Freshman guard Mercedes Smith led with 4 assists while fellow freshman forward Federica Staton, making her first start of her young career, finished with a balanced game of 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

SAU was outshot 50% to 36% on the evening as Milligan was able to make their buckets when they needed to after getting off to a sluggish start. The Lady Buffaloes were also an impressive 14 of 16 from behind the line.

Milligan was led by the game-leading 17 points from guard Kayla Kelly while the Lady Buffaloes also had 5 women in double figure scoring.

However, the Lady Knights now fall to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the AAC while Milligan improves to 10-5 and 3-0.

St. Andrews will next make the long trek to conference opponent Tennessee Wesleyan College for a matchup with the Bulldogs on Saturday at 2 pm.
