BLUEFIELD, Va. - The St. Andrews University Football team dropped a devastating 34-27 game to Mid-South Appalachian Division foe Bluefield College (Va.) on the road Saturday evening.

BLUEFIELD 34, SAU 27

FIRST HALF

SAU got off to a good start as they drove 48 yards in 5 plays to score on a 30 yard touchdown pass from local Scotland HS product, redshirt freshman QB Dashaun Ferguson (FR/Laurinburg, NC) to fellow RS freshman wide receiver Jermaine Trotman Jr. (FR/Virginia Beach, VA), who was making his season debut.

Trotman immediately added a spark to the Knight offense as the Knights would go on to score 20 points in the first quarter and 27 first half points.

Immediately after the big touchdown for the Knights, SAU would come right back on offense as RS freshman tailback Jacob Rushing (FR/Raeford, NC) pictured below, would scamper 61 yards for the score and put SAU up 13-0 just 7 minutes into the game. After Bluefield would score on a 7 yard touchdown run, the Knights would again come right back with a score of their own as Ferguson threw a terrific pass to Trotman who did the rest. He ran into the end zone on a 63 yard completion as SAU would go up 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.

After a BC field goal made it 20-10, the Knights came back again with their offense driving 64 yards on 5 plays and ending it with Trotman running the ball in for the 9 yard score on a nifty reverse to make it 27-10 Knights with 6 minutes to play in the half.

Unfortunately, Bluefield would add a rushing score before halftime cutting SAU's lead down to 10 at the break.

Trotman would set a SAU season high in receiving yards with 98 along with his two touchdowns receiving and one rushing. He also had 9 rushing yards and 48 return yards as he finished with 155 total yards on the day.

SECOND HALF

Bluefield then scored their third touchdown of the day on a QB keeper to make it 27-24 with 11 minutes to play in the third quarter. A field goal by BC then tied the game with 13 minutes to play in the 4th quarter.

SAU, unfortunately, couldn't get their offense going in the second half as Bluefield would go on to score the game-winning touchdown with 53 seconds left on a 7 yard rush and go on for the seven-point win outscoring the Knights 17-0 in the half.

OFFENSE

Bluefield rushed for 231 yards on the day on 64 carries while SAU carried the ball 30 less times for almost the same amount of yards with 229. Rushing finished the day with 61 yards while fellow RBs Josh Godwin (FR/Gastonia, NC) and Chris Decker (FR/Freeport, FL) combined for 58 yards rushing.

Ferguson ended up finishing 8 of 15 for 157 yards and two touchdowns, but threw two costly interceptions while he also rushed for 66 yards

Bluefield also threw for 216 yards while SAU had 157 yards passing which was a season high.

DEFENSE

Freshmen safety Nathan Belch (FR/Lyons, GA) led the Knights with 12 solo tackles and 14 total for a new season–high for him and the team. Freshman linebacker Chris Smith (FR/Orlando, FL) then recorded ten total tackles while freshman defensive end Codie Emunson (FR/Swansboro, NC) had 9 tackles (4 for loss) and a sack for the Knights. Freshman DE Benjamin Houston (FR/Gainesville, FL) also added 8 tackles for SAU.

Freshman linebacker Christian Scott (FR/Lenoir, NC) then finished with 8 tackles while redshirt freshman LB Andrew Austin (FR/Taylors, SC) finished with 7 total tackles and four solo.

St. Andrews falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Appalachian Division with the heartbreaking defeat while Bluefield improves to 3-3 and 1-0 in division.

St. Andrews will now enjoy their second bye week of the season before getting back on the road to face Appalachian Division foe Point University (Ga.) on Oct. 21 at 1:30 PM.
