LAURINBURG, N.C. - The St. Andrews University men's soccer team used two first half goals to oust AAC rival Point University (Ga.) 2-1 at home on Sunday afternoon.

SAU sophomore midfielder Andres Carvajal (SO/Caracas, Venezuela) got the Knights on the board early with his goal in the 6th minute off an assist from senior Guilherme Soares (SR/Rio de Janiero, Brazil). The Knights would then add to that lead with a beautiful goal from junior forward Julio Rico (JR/Madrid, Spain) off a nice pass from senior forward Manu Escalera (SR/Valencia, Spain).

The goal was Carvajal's first of the season and Soares' third assist. Rico's goal was his first of the season as well while Escalera's assist was his first too.

After the Knights had shut down the Skyhawks for the first 77 minutes, Point finally broke through in the 78th minute with a goal that made it through a jumbled box in front of the SAU keeper.

However, the Knights would keep the Hawks off the board for the remainder of the game to hang on for the hard-fought win. St. Andrews did have some early shots bounce off the post and crossbars in the early portions of the second half off of corner kicks that would have given the Knights an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

SAU won the shot count in the second half 7-6 and 14-13 overall with Escalera leading with three shots and two on goal as the Knights got shots from 8 different players.

Sophomore goalkeeper Valentino Parini (SO/Milan, Italy) made four saves on seven shots on goal while the team made two more saves. Parini is now allowing just 2.5 goals/game with 26 saves to rank 5th in the AAC.

St. Andrews improves to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the AAC while Point falls to 6-4-1 and 0-4 in conference.

St. Andrews will next go on the road Tuesday to face non-conference foe Bob Jones University (S.C.) on Tuesday evening in Greenville, SC at 7:00 PM.
