LAURINBURG, NC - The St. Andrews University women's volleyball team eased past new AAC South Division foe Brenau Univ. (Ga.) in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) at home Tuesday evening to win their 5th straight conference game and 5th game overall.

SAU 3, BRENAU 0

Brenau and SAU went back and forth in a tight first set until SAU pulled away late to take it 25-20. The teams combined for 23 kills in the opening game led by Brenau's 15 as each team hit .167.

The second set saw the Knights jump out to a strong 21-11 lead before Brenau rallied back cutting SAU's lead down to two at 23-21 as they went on a 10-2 run. However, the Knights found their attack and took the last few points of the set to take it 25-22 on 16 kills while hitting .256.

The final set also was competitive for the first 20 points until SAU went on a run to lead 16-9 and 20-13. Brenau could never get within four points after that as SAU went on to win the final game 25-19 on 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .237.

OFFENSE

Senior outside hitter Tessa Smith (SR/Jacksonville, FL) led the Lady Knights with 11 kills while hitting .280 with six digs. Senior middle blocker Kiah Cheatham (SR/Kalamazoo, MI) also contributed six kills with three digs, two blocks and two aces while hitting .308.

Senior middle blocker Lindsey Wagner (SR/Austin, TX) then added 9 kills and hit .250 with two blocks while junior MB Destiney O'Kane (JR/El Paso, TX) also finished with 4 kills, 4 blocks, and 2 digs while hitting .429 on 7 attacks. Freshman middle Kylie Winchell (FR/Morehead City, NC) also contributed four assisted blocks in the win while senior right side hitter Andrea Navarro (SR/Salinas, CA) threw in four kills as well.

Sophomore setters Shalia Powell (SO/Dayton, NV) and Brooke Thomas (SO/Brunswick, GA) combined for 32 assists and 11 digs led by Powell's 21 assists. The duo also combined for 3 kills and one ace.

DEFENSE

Freshman libero Karina Lozada (FR/Bayamon, Puerto Rico) and senior DS Austin Payne (SR/Kingsport, TN) combined for 28 digs with Lozada leading the way with 15 digs, two aces, and three assists.

SAU improves to 9-4 and 5-1 in the AAC while Brenau falls to 2-13 and 1-3 in the AAC. This was the first meeting with Brenau as a conference member and 2nd meeting all-time with the last coming back in 2013.

St. Andrews will next go on the road to face South Division rivals Reinhardt (Ga.) and Point Universities (Ga.) on Friday and Saturday in Georgia. Friday's game begins at 6:30 at Reinhardt with Saturday set to start at 1:00 PM.
