LAURINBURG, NC - The St. Andrews University Football team fell 38-20 to Mid-South non-division foe Faulkner University (Ala.) on Saturday in their second home game in school history in front of a crowd of 1,000 fans.

Faulkner 38, SAU 20

First Half

St. Andrews got off to a rough start as they allowed Faulkner's Michael Watkins to run the opening kick back for a score to lead 7-0 right out of the gate.

Faulkner then extended their lead to 17-0 with a FG and a touchdown to lead at the end of the first quarter. They then added two more scores in the second quarter to take a 31-0 lead at the break. SAU drove down deep into Faulkner's territory twice in the first half, but each time turned the ball over as they looked to cut into their lead.

Second Half

The Eagles used up the first 7 minutes of the clock in the second half, but came away with no points as SAU held Faulkner to just 7 points in the half.

However, the Knights would finally get on the board with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter thanks to their defense and freshman safety Nathan Belch (FR/Lyons, GA). He picked off Eagles QB Mason Blocker's pass and returned it 47 yards for the score. It was the second interception return for a touchdown this season by the Knights. Freshman defensive end Bernard Brown (FR/Ladson, SC) had the other defensive score back in week one.

After Faulkner added another score to lead 38-7 in the fourth, SAU would score the final 13 points of the game on two big-play touchdowns. The first was a 55 yard touchdown run by freshman RB Samuel Wright (FR/Austell, GA) and the other was a terrific throw and catch by freshman QB Keyshawn Brown (FR/Virginia Beach, VA) to freshman WR Kashard Cohens (FR/Norfolk, VA) for 65 yards.

The receiving touchdown was the first in SAU history as well. The rushing score was Wright's second of the season. Unfortunately, that would be the closest SAU would come for the rest of the game, but the mostly all-freshman team still put on a good performance against a talented football program from Alabama.

OFFENSE

Faulkner only outgained the Knights by ten in rushing yards, (170-160) but had the control in the passing game 305-80. Faulkner used the clock to control the majority of the game while forcing three SAU turnovers and outgained the Knights 478-240, but with double the offensive plays.

Wright and RS freshman QB Kacey Otto (FR/Mooresville, NC) led the Knights with 55 yards apiece on the ground with Otto averaging 4.6 yards/carry. Cohens had his big reception TD for 65 yards to lead while fellow freshman wide receiver Tyler Carr (FR/Williamston, NC) had two catches for 15 yards. Brown finished the day throwing for 80 yards.

DEFENSE

Redshirt freshman linebacker Andrew Austin (FR/Taylors, SC) led the Knights in tackles with nine, one for loss and five solo with his first career interception while freshman DE Darius West (FR/Jacksonville, NC) had 8 tackles (2 for loss) and six solo. Freshman LB Mike Lundy also had 7 tackles and a sack while freshman LB Isaiah Page (FR/Clinton, NC) had six tackles (5 solo). Freshman DE Josh Jones (FR/Edgefield, SC) then led with two sacks and three tackles while freshman LB Jimmy Edwards (FR/Lyons, GA) had five solo tackles and 1.5 sacks.

St. Andrews falls to 1-3 with the defeat while Faulkner improves to 2-2.

St. Andrews will next remain at home and host Appalachian Division foe Pikeville University (Ky.) (2-2) on Sept. 30 at 1:30 PM at Knights Stadium.
