Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University wrestling team dropped their first NAIA match of the season to Shorter University (GA) as some mental mistakes cost the Knights in the end 34-15.

Junior 125 pounder Chauncey Foster started things off by receiving another forfeit to improve to a team-leading 8-2 this season. Senior co-captain Sterling Perry entered the third period trailing 5-1 and rallied with two late takedowns, but it was not enough as he lost by decision 7-5.

Sophomore Nick Sauceda made his season debut tonight at 149 lbs. and after throwing his opponent to his back early in the first period to grab the lead, he let it slip away at the end losing by fall. Sophomore 149 pounder Kody Getkin then bumped up a weight class to challenge Shorter's 157 pounder and just missed catching his opponent on his back with one of his patented throws and ended up falling in defeat 18-7.

After intermission, sophomore co-captain Steffan Baker came out on fire and immediately picked up his opponent with a beautiful double leg takedown and came close to pinning him before hanging on for the hard-fought 18-15 win to bring St. Andrews to within 19-9 in the dual match.

174 pounder Russell Lindsay ran out to a dominating first period lead as he jumped all over his opponent 13-2 before getting careless in the second period as he got reversed and pinned to change the momentum back in Shorter's favor.

However, the St. Andrews faithful would finally get something to cheer about when senior Richard Manwarren (184), making his season debut, came out and pinned his opponent in the first minute of the match with a tight cradle cutting the deficit to 25-15 and really pumping up the crowd.

Freshman Jared Key then battled hard vs. a more experienced opponent before eventually succumbing 8-3 in a hard fought match. Shorter ended the dual with a 41 second fall of Knights heavyweight Davis Jones to make the final 34-15.

SAU (1-4) will now take a month-long break before returning home to host nearby rival UNC-Pembroke January 9 at 7 pm here at Harris Court.
