ACWORTH, GA- The St. Andrews University Men's Golf team set a new school record in shooting a 282 in the second round of the AAC Direct National Qualifier on Monday. However, two-day leader Point University (Ga.), held off St. Andrews' valiant rally to win the AAC Men's Golf Championship by just a single stroke, 884-885 to clinch the automatic bid to Nationals.

St. Andrews' junior Joe Hurn (JR/Mountaintop, PA) finishes at -3 under par (213) for the tournament and is the individual champion as he will represent the AAC individually at the NAIA National Championship since he is not on the winning team. Hurn shot 72 in round one to sit in 2nd before his 71 and 70 put him into the lead and he held on for the win. Hurn, pictured, was named to the all-tournament team as well for his victory.

Reinhardt shot the best overall round of Day 2 with a 294 while SAU was in a 3-way tie for 2nd on day two with their 295. The Knights struggled in the rain in the first round Monday morning shooting a 308 to sit in a tie for 5th before their school record 282 on Monday afternoon in round two vaulted them into 2nd place, just a stroke back. However, SAU's individual scores of 70 by Hurn, 71 by John Lyle (SR/Goodview, VA), 75 from Alberto Firpi and a 79 from Dan Wieck and Carlo Stella (SR/Milan, Italy) was not quite enough to overtake Point on Tuesday.

However, the best two rounds of the tournament for the Knights belonged to seniors Carlo Stella (Milan, Italy) and Daniel Wieck (SR/Oviedo, FL) (Oviedo, FL) as they shot rounds of 69 each, (-3 under par) in the second round. Unfortunately, their other two rounds were not quite as low with Stella shooting 78-69-79 for a 226 and a tie for 17th place while Wieck, who made the all-conference second team, shot 79-69-79 for 19th place.

Sophomore Alberto Firpi (SO/Puerto Rico) also played well improving by six shots from his round one of 79 to shoot 73 in the second round and finally a 75 in the third round to place 19th along with Wieck at 227. All five SAU Golfers improved their scores from round one.

Senior John Lyle then improved drastically from round to round going from a first round of 82 to a second round of 77 and then an impressive final round of 71 to vault him into 26th place overall out of 53 golfers in the field, as the Knights put four of their five starters in the top 20 of the tournament. Firpi also led the team and the field with two eagles while Stella and Hurn tied for 5th with 10 birdies each. Hurn also made 35 pars as well.

St. Andrews played so well in round two that they improved by 26 shots after a 308 in round one. The top five teams all finished within 7 shots of the lead after the final round of the tournament at Governor's Towne Club, hosted by Reinhardt University.
