LAURINBURG, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Baseball team dropped a heartbreaking first game of their AAC series with Truett-McConnell University (Ga.) in Laurinburg on Thursday afternoon falling 6-5 as they could not compete their ninth inning rally. The Knights also dropped another one-run game the following day falling 2-1 in game one of the Friday DH. Truett then poured it on the Knights in a testy game three of the series 13-1.

Game 1: TMU 6, SAU 5, (9 innings)

In the first game of the weekend on Thursday, the Knights got out to a solid 2-0 lead on Emerson Gross' RBI double and led 3-2 after four innings because of a sacrifice fly from freshman Lee Poteat (FR/Salisbury, NC). However a rain storm delayed the game for an hour knocking out sophomore starter Zach Mathes (SO/Collinsville, IL) after 4 innings. He had gone 4 plus allowing 3 hits and 2 runs on 5 walks and 2 strikeouts before junior Landon Kincaid (JR/Morganton, NC) (3-5) relieved him going three innings but allowing Truett to score 3 runs and take the 5-3 lead.

After Truett added another run in the 8th off reliever Michael Wright (SO/Whitakers, NC) to lead 6-3, the Knights came back with RBI doubles from Mikey Morgan (SR/Norwood, NC) and Ryne Dickens (JR/Reidsville, NC) in the 8th and 9th innings to get within one at 6-5 with no outs. After Dickens advanced to third on a passed ball, he unfortunately got picked off at third base after unsuccessfully trying to score on a suicide squeeze bunt. The next two batters then struck out to tend the game.

Senior LF Terrence Jackson (SR/Creswell, NC), Dickens, Gross, and Morgan all recorded two-hit games while SAU outhit the Bears 10-8.

Game 2: Truett 2, SAU 1

Junior starter Trevor Maly (JR/Channahon, IL) pitched a terrific game allowing only two 4th-inning runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts before leaving in the 5th to fellow junior reliever Zach Saylor (JR/Jamestown, NC). Saylor went on to finish the final 2.2 innings allowing just 3 hits with 2 Ks.

Unfortunately, SAU could not get their offense on track in the game leaving nine men on base against Truett starter Greg Elder who threw all 7 innings. Junior DH Emerson Gross (JR/Seldan, NY) led the Knights with a two-hit game and the lone RBI and stolen base while he and Justin Williams (SR/Stanley, NC) hit doubles.

Game 3: Truett 13, SAU 1

In the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon, Truett would roll to the big win scoring 11 runs over the 5th and 6th innings to put the game out of reach. Truett starter Chris Carden shut down the Knights offense throwing all 7 innings allowing just 3 hits and none until the 6th inning with one run on 12 Ks.

Knights starter Holden Drake (SO/Burlington, NC) (4-3) tossed five innings giving up five hits and 6 runs (one earned) on 4 walks and 3 Ks.

St. Andrews falls to 20-27 overall and 6-15 in the conference as Truett-McConnell broke a tie with the Knights and moved into a tie for 6th in the conference. TMU goes to 25-19 and 9-12 in conference. SAU remains one game back of Bluefield for the final spot in the AAC Tournament.

SAU will next go on the road to face former Div. II rival Pfeiffer University (NC) at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
