ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. - The St. Andrews University Men's golf team was back in action this week in the AAC Spring Conference Championships hosted by Milligan College at Elizabethton GC in Elizabethton, TN.
The men placed 7th out of 12 conference teams finishing 11 strokes back of 2nd place. SAU shot a total score of 616 as they improved by six shots from day one. SAU shot 305 on day two to tie for the third best round of the tournament.
St. Andrews was led by a 5th place finish from senior Daniel Wieck (SR/Oviedo, FL), who also made the all-tournament team as well with his two-day score of 148. Wieck shot a 78 in round one but came back with a stellar round two score of 70 which happened to be the best score in round two by any golfer in the field.
Milligan won the tournament with a 588 to win by 17 shots over runner-up Tennessee Wesleyan led by Josh Gambrell's 145 (68-77).
Fellow senior Carlo Stella (SR/Milan, Italy) then finished 15th overall and 2nd for SAU with his two-day score of 151 (+7) as he shot a 74 in round one, the best score for any Knight before firing a 77 in round two.
Senior John Lyle (SR/Goodview, VA) then placed third on SAU, playing as an individual, and finished tied for 27th overall with rounds of 77 and 78 for a 155. Freshman Caleb Hensley (SO/Monroe, NC) then came next for the Knights shooting consecutive rounds of 79 for a 158 and 37th place finish while junior Joe Hurn (JR/Mountaintop, PA) finished 43rd after two rounds of 80 for a 160 score. Finally, sophomore Alberto Firpi (SO/Puerto Rico) came in 48th place out of 66 after rounds of 82 and 79 for a 161.
The Knights are next in action April 24-25 to compete in their AAC National Qualifier at Governor's Towne Club in Acworth, Ga.
