Men's Basketball - Sat, Nov. 10, 2012 by Troy Baranik

Rock Hill, SC—The St. Andrews University men's basketball team traveled down to Rock Hill, SC Saturday evening to challenge the NCAA Division 1 Winthrop Eagles for an exhibition game in Winthrop's season opener. However, Winthrop's size and experience were too much for the Knights as they saddled SAU with another loss 80-48.

Senior forward Demetrius Monroe led St. Andrews with 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting while freshman guard DJ Carnegie had 8 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Freshman center Chris Orr also contributed as he blocked 3 shots.

After being outscored by Winthrop 41-16 at the half, St. Andrews played much better in the second half as the young team only trailed 39-32 in that half as they began to hang with the division 1 school.

Poor shooting and missed free throws ended up leading to SAU's demise again as nerves kicked in during the first half as the Knights played in front of the biggest crowd of the season so far (2,626) in Winthrop Coliseum.

Winthrop shot 50% for the game including making 7 treys on the night as their ferocious defense held SAU to 33 % shooting for the game.

Even though the game will not count against St. Andrews' record it was still great experience for the young team. Playing a team with so much experience in front of a huge crowd will help them out tremendously down the road.

SAU (0-2) will continue their road trip as they make their way to Mars Hill, NC to battle the Lions of Mars Hill College Tuesday Nov. 13 at 7:00 pm.
